Qantas Delays Airbus A380 Service Launch to Johannesburg Until September

The start of Qantas' Airbus A380 service between Sydney and Johannesburg has been rescheduled. According to Qantas' most recent schedule update, which Cirium published, the double-decker quadjet's debut was originally scheduled for July 8th. However, it will now occur on September 30th.

This delay follows Qantas' decision to use the Boeing 787-9 to resume service to Johannesburg in January 2022 following difficulties caused by the epidemic. The much-anticipated arrival of the A380, with its 485 seats, suddenly coincides with the start of the southern spring, shortly before summer demand peaks. It's crucial to remember that there can be more timetable modifications.

The A380 will initially fly five weekly flights upon deployment to South Africa, down from the current six weekly, before returning to six weekly in late October. According to the revised itinerary, which will take effect on September 30th, flight QF63 will leave Sydney at 09:30 and arrive in Johannesburg at 16:10. Flight QF64, the return leg, will leave Johannesburg at 18:40 and arrive in Sydney at 14:35 the following day.

After the A380 takes over, it will service routes from Sydney to Melbourne and Los Angeles, as well as Sydney to London Heathrow via Singapore and Sydney to Johannesburg.

About 144,000 roundtrip passengers were registered on Qantas' popular Sydney-Johannesburg route in the year preceding November 2023. This route is more direct than other options that go via Singapore or the Middle East and benefits from a substantial South African population living in Australia.

A more thorough analysis of the passenger data shows that 25% of passengers only travel between Sydney and Johannesburg, while 41% of passengers switch to another Qantas flight in Sydney. Furthermore, different travel patterns are shown by the fact that 18% of passengers connect to another airline in Johannesburg and 16% connect in both Sydney and Johannesburg.

Apart from Qantas, on April 28th, South African Airways is scheduled to start operating three weekly flights between Johannesburg and Perth using the A340-300 aircraft. Although the route would rely more largely on point-to-point passengers because to the reduced frequency compared to past operations, SAA still has a role for the A340 despite its inefficiencies.
