Over the weekend, a United Airlines Boeing 777 experienced extreme turbulence during its descent during a transcontinental flight, resulting in 16 injuries. The incident happened aboard United Airlines flight UA1890, which was a Boeing 777-200ER registered N788UA that was travelling from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Newark Liberty International (EWR). The majority of the flight went without incident until the plane started to descend towards Newark, at which point passengers and cabin personnel were hurt by sudden, intense turbulence.
The aircraft made a safe landing at Newark on February 10th, February 10, 25 minutes ahead of schedule despite the turbulence.
After landing, three flight attendants and two passengers were transferred to University Hospital for treatment, even though many of the injured did not require additional medical attention.
Every day, transcontinental flight UA1890 leaves about 08:20 or 08:25 from LAX and arrives in Newark between 16:25 and 16:40. United Airlines competes with several airlines on this route, including Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines. While this route is primarily flown by the Boeing 777-200ER, other aircraft, like the 787-9 Dreamliner and the 757-200, are also occasionally employed.
Registered as N788UA, the particular Boeing 777-200ER that was involved in the incident is roughly 26.6 years old and has been in United Airlines' fleet since July 1997. The airplane is still in use despite the event.
Although they are uncommon, turbulence-related injuries do happen from time to time. There have been reports of similar accidents on other aircraft, including an Emirates Airbus A380 to Dubai and an ANA Boeing 787 to Bangkok, when extreme turbulence caused casualties.
