Flight 007 from American Airlines to Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) in Ocho Rios marks the launch of the airline's newest route to Jamaica. With two weekly flights from Miami to Jamaica by Embraer E175s, this is the airline's third destination in Jamaica.
As the first US-based airline to offer direct flights to Ocho Rios, American Airlines' introduction of this route in September strengthens connectivity between the US and this exciting location. After a quick 75-minute flight, the first Flight AA4007 took off from Miami International Airport (MIA) at 10:34 local time and arrived in Ocho Rios at 11:50. The flight carried 71 passengers under the command of Jamaican native Captain Marc Coley.
The Managing Director of American Airlines for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, Jose Maria Giraldo, acknowledged his company's satisfaction in reaching Ocho Rios and emphasised the strategic significance of linking this attractive location with Miami, the airline's main international hub.
Every Wednesday and Saturday, planes will take off from MIA at 10:05 and land in OCJ at 11:03. The reverse flight will take off from OCJ at 11:43 and land in MIA at 14:32.
American Airlines intends to provide more than 160,000 seats to and from Jamaica in the upcoming month, with a large percentage of those seats departing from Miami. This is an addition to their current offerings, which include frequent daily flights from MIA to Kingston and Montego Bay as well as flights from other significant US locations.
The selection of flight number 007 honours Ocho Rios's ties to Ian Fleming, the man who created James Bond, who penned the first Bond book at his Goldeneye house nearby in 1952. The decision is in line with American Airlines' longstanding practice of giving their routes significant identifiers.
Although the route was first scheduled to debut in November 2022 and was first announced in April 2022, operational issues caused delays. But when it finally does launch, it will have marked a major turning point in American Airlines' growth plans.
With talks about stepping up the frequency to daily flights and the potential for more routes to important US destinations like Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, and Tampa—all of which have expressed interest in servicing Ocho Rios—there is hope for the route's future expansion.
