Temporary Discontinuation of Service to Santiago and Buenos Aires
Many variables make it necessary for airline schedules to be constantly adjusted, often even after routes are set. American Airlines has prolonged its suspension of flights from New York to Tel Aviv because of continuous problems in the region, according to a recent article from Simple Flying. The airline has now said that it will be temporarily discontinuing its flights from Dallas to Santiago and Buenos Aires from March through October.
Although frequencies were lowered during the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere, which correspond with winter in the South American cities, American airlines continued to provide year-round flights to Santiago and Buenos Aires in 2023. From January to March, flights were scheduled every day; from March to October, they were scheduled occasionally each week; in November and December, they resumed their daily schedule. This year, however, flights will only operate through the end of March before being entirely discontinued until the beginning of October.
Based on available data, American Airlines intends to run 312 round-trip flights to Santiago and 309 round-trip flights to Buenos Aires this year. Throughout the year, the airline will provide 73,008 flights to Santiago and 88,065 seats to Buenos Aires. When contacted for a statement, American stated that the delays in the delivery of the Boeing 787 was the main cause of the schedule revisions and that these suspensions were pre-planned and already included in their program.
American Airlines, with its main office located in Fort Worth, has had to make many route alterations due to delays in the arrival of new Boeing 787 aircraft. Not every route has seen a decrease, though. American began operating daily flights to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport this year from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport; previously, the route was only available daily beginning at the end of March. Furthermore, from May 6 to September 3, the airline will operate twice-daily flights on this route.
There will be a number of new routes introduced in Europe during the summer that will need the use of widebody aircraft. American announced new service to Copenhagen, Nice, and Naples last August, bringing the total number of European destinations that are served from Philadelphia to 14. These routes will be flown by Boeing 787-9s. American Airlines will be the only US airline servicing Copenhagen on these routes and the only US carrier with a hub at Philadelphia International Airport.
American announced intentions to start a new seasonal route from Dallas to Barcelona and to resume service from Chicago O'Hare International Airport to Venice Marco Polo Airport.
Additional Santiago Service Reductions
The temporary suspension of service to Santiago is not exclusive to American. Simple Flying revealed earlier in December that United Airlines had similarly halted service from George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport to the capital of Chile. Furthermore, a few weeks before, United's Star Alliance member Air Canada announced that it was discontinuing its Santiago route from Toronto Pearson International Airport. Although United did not give a reason for discontinuing this service, it did suggest that travellers look into other options, such as travelling via COPA through Panama or Avianca through Bogota.
