Prearranged Eclipse Flight
As the Natural History Museum of the United Kingdom states, total solar eclipses happen only once every eighteen months or so. There will be a total solar eclipse on April 8th of this year, and Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has planned a special flying experience so that travellers can witness this amazing event. The importance of this event is emphasised by Warren Weston, Lead Meteorologist at Delta, who points out that it won't happen across the Northern Hemisphere again until 2044.The flight path has been carefully designed to maximise the amount of time spent within the eclipse's path of totality.
The specially scheduled flight is scheduled to take off on April 8 at 12:15 from Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and land at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) at 16:20. Because of its huge windows, Delta has chosen the Airbus A220 for this trip; Flight 1218 will be the -300 version, which is greater in size. The aircraft will hold about 140 people who will be able to see the eclipse.
While not as good as Flight 1218, Delta has also found five more flights that provide passengers with fantastic views of the eclipse.
The following flights are scheduled to depart: DL 5699, which takes off from Detroit at 14:59 EST and uses an Embraer E175; DL 924, which takes off from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport at 08:40 PST and uses an Airbus A320; DL 2869, which takes off from LAX to San Antonio International Airport at 09:00 PST and uses an Airbus A319; DL 1001, which takes off from Salt Lake City International Airport to SAT at 10:08 MST and uses an Airbus A220-300; and DL 1683, which takes off from SLC to AUS at 09:55 MST and uses an Airbus A320.
Delta Air Lines' Managing Director of Domestic Network Planning, Eric Beck, emphasises the teamwork that goes into these flights and underscores Delta's dedication to giving its customers outstanding experiences.
There are now 23 A220-300s in Delta's fleet, averaging 1.8 years old, and 77 more are on order. Cirium data shows that 3,010 round-trip flights for the -300 variant are planned just this month. Furthermore, Delta has 45 A220-100s in service; of these, 34 are in use at the moment, and there are no future plans to get more of this smaller model. The three cabins on the A220-300s can accommodate up to 140 passengers each, divided between first class, Delta Comfort+, and the general cabin.
