Following an engine failure, a Delta Air Lines Airbus A330 makes an emergency landing in Barcelona

The 20-year-old Delta Air Lines A330-300 is now grounded at Barcelona El Prat (BCN) due to an engine failure that occurred on February 1. While Delta flight 195 was traveling to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), an event took place. About one hour into the flight, the aircraft had to make a U-turn and stay in BCN.

At 27,00 feet in the air, the engine problem was found. The aircraft continued to climb but at this point reduced speed. It then began to turn back over Zaragoza and made a safe landing at BCN.

Important Information regarding the Incident

The day before the incident, the aircraft, registered N803NW, had finished a round-trip from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York. It had run flawlessly on several foreign trips all of January.

The impacted passengers were flown to Atlanta by Delta using a 22-year-old 767-400ER that was originally scheduled to operate a route from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to JFK. The replacement flight went off without a hitch. Still unknown, though, is what will happen to the initial group of passengers scheduled for the Frankfurt to JFK route.

N803NW, which has two Pratt & Whitney engines, was first delivered to Northwest Airlines in 2003. With an average age of fifteen years, Delta operates more than thirty A330-300s. The airline also operates a fleet of A350s and Boeing widebody aircraft, in addition to managing A330-200s and A330-900s.

Engine Difficulties in the Aviation Sector

International flight crews are always on the lookout for aircraft performance, especially before transoceanic voyages, therefore turnbacks are not unheard of. Recently, on a short-haul trip to Hong Kong (HKG), a China Airlines A330-300 returned to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) owing to cabin pressurization issues, while a Lufthansa A330-300 had to return to FRA due to an engine fault.

Two A321s (neo and ceo versions) flown by United Airlines and Frontier Airlines in the United States had engine issues, forcing them to return to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Denver International Airport (DEN). Only two weeks had passed since the United Airlines A321neo went into service when the incident happened.
