After almost six years of anticipation, Hawaiian Airlines' first Boeing 787 Dreamliner is taking off for Honolulu on its historic first flight. This much anticipated addition, which is expected to land in Hawaii on Wednesday, February 14th at 22:08, marks the beginning of a new chapter for Hawaiian Airlines.
Hawaiian Airlines is quite excited about the Dreamliner's arrival since it brings with it a lot of advantages. Compared to the present fleet of Airbus A330-200s, the Boeing 787 promises dramatically improved passenger experience, lower emissions, and lower fuel consumption thanks to its cutting-edge technology.
Hawaiian Airlines ordered a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner back in July 2018, and on December 21, 2023, the aircraft—registered as N781HA and carrying MSN 66429—completed its inaugural flight. It is noteworthy that the speed at which it went from its first flight to delivery contrasts sharply with another Dreamliner, registered as N780HA, which made its first flight on June 18, 2021, but has not yet been delivered.
According to flight statistics, Dreamliner N781HA was delayed and took off at 17:23 instead of the original scheduled departure time of 16:00 from Charleston International Airport (CHS). It is expected to arrive at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) around 22:28.
The second Boeing 787-9, registered as N780HA, took off from Charleston on June 18, 2021, and on June 22, 2021, it reached San Antonio Lackland Air Force Base (SKF). After that, it stayed at San Antonio until July 29, 2023, when it left for Everett Paine Field (PAE). From there, it was idle until a few quick flights in January of current year. At Victorville Southern California Logistics Airport (VCV), it is currently dormant.
Hawaiian Airlines has big plans for its Dreamliner operations in the future. According to Cirium schedule data, the airline will run 617 Dreamliner flights between Honolulu and San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, as well as Kahului and Los Angeles, between April 15 and October 1, 2024. At first, the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) will be the main routes served by the 787.
Thereafter, flights will run between Honolulu and Los Angeles International (LAX) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) from mid-May until early September. Subsequently, flights will operate between Honolulu and Los Angeles from September 8 to October 1, in addition to a new route between Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui and LAX.
The 12-aircraft Hawaiian Airlines Dreamliner fleet will have a three-class configuration that can carry 300 passengers. 34 Leihoku Suites in business class, 79 seats in premium economy, and 187 seats in the economy cabin make up this configuration. With a 1-2-1 design, direct aisle access, and privacy doors, the Leihoku Suites will provide guests with an opulent and cozy travel experience.
