John Mullen has been designated as Qantas' new chairman, and he will take over the position on July 1. Mullen has a wealth of operations and logistics knowledge from his 15-year employment with DHL Express. He has held senior positions at Telstra and is currently the Chairman of Treasury Wine Estate.
Mullen succeeds Richard Goyder, the departing Chairman of Qantas, who made his announcement in October after pressure from the airline's pilots. Having taken over the role in 2018, Goyder led the airline through a turbulent time that included the pandemic, court cases, and labour issues.
Goyder was upbeat about Qantas' future under Mullen's direction despite the difficulties, saying, "John offers a wealth of expertise... He is the ideal person to guide the national carrier into the upcoming stage.
Mullen's appointment comes after Vanessa Hudson was appointed CEO of Qantas in September of last year, causing a major reorganisation in the company's executive staff. Mullen expressed his excitement about leading Qantas to new heights with Hudson, echoing Goyder's confidence.
Nora Scheinkestel was also appointed by Qantas as a non-executive director and chair of the remuneration committee, as part of the company's continuing restructuring, to replace the gaps left by retiring members.
In light of the recent controversies, Qantas hopes to rebuild the airline's reputation under Mullen and Hudson's leadership. To determine the course of this new chapter, all eyes will be on the carrier's impending half-year financial figures, which are scheduled for release on February 22nd.
