As part of its summer schedule, Qatar Airways has announced the return of its flights to Lisbon, Portugal, in keeping with the resurrection of travel routes during the ongoing recovery. This action is consistent with the airline's overarching plan to grow its network.
In June, Qatar Airways will resume service between Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha and Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) in Lisbon. This is a part of the airline's 2024 network expansion, which will cover over 170 destinations.
Beginning on June 6, the airline will fly its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft on this route. According to information on the airline's website, flights will be accessible four times a week, leaving from Doha on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Thierry Antinori, Chief Commercial Officer of Qatar Airways, expressed his pleasure at the resumption, saying:
We are happy to announce the relaunch of our services to the fascinating city of Lisbon as we continue to strengthen our position in the European market. In addition to providing convenient travel options between Qatar and Portugal, the reopened route allows Portugal to be seamlessly connected to a number of destinations in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. All of this is made possible by the world-class duty-free shopping and lounges that passengers can enjoy at the Best Airport in the Middle East.
Through the Discover Qatar project, Qatar Airways is offering stopover packages to encourage travel to Qatar and give passengers 24-hour check-in facilities so they can make the most of their time there.
The summer schedule for 2024 has been revealed by Qatar Airways, and it includes Venice, Italy, and Hamburg, Germany. The airline has also included Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to its upcoming schedules as part of its service expansion. After a fruitful dialogue between Madagascar Civil Aviation (ACM) and the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA), Qatar Airways was given permission to start operating daily flights between Madagascar and Qatar in January.
The airline is also adding 10 weekly flights from Doha to Boston, which will be the most on this route since it began service in March 2016. May is when this change is expected to go into effect.
Hub airports, such as Hamad International Airport in Doha, are seeing an increase in passenger traffic as a result of the comeback in international travel. According to reports, the airport in Qatar had a 22% increase in aircraft movements and a 31% increase in passenger traffic in 2023.
The airport, which operated flights to 255 locations in the previous year, has also drawn new carriers, including Spanish airline Air Iberia, Chinese airline Xiamen Airlines, and Indian airline Vistara. Notably, by giving international travellers a wide range of connectivity options, Qatar Airways, the main carrier, has significantly contributed to these numbers.
The CEO of Qatar Airways Group and Management Chair of the Department of Health, Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, stressed that the "record-breaking year for the airport underscores the aviation industry's resilience and determination."
