Spirit Airlines, well-known for its incredibly low prices, is expanding its summer schedule by adding two additional flights to Puerto Rico. Spirit Airlines has been operating on US territory for more than 20 years, and it is still growing throughout the Caribbean.
Spirit Airlines has added two additional flights to its network, giving American travellers looking to visit Puerto Rico this summer more options. Two of the seven new routes are headed for Puerto Rico and are expected to debut in May.
The low-cost airline has revealed that it will start operating flights from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston, Texas, to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan on May 8. On May 9, it will begin operating flights from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) in Louisiana.
Four flights from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) are among the additional new routes; these are described in the accompanying article. Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will also begin offering daily nonstop service from May 8 to New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
Major airlines that operate flights to the island are drawn to Puerto Rico, which is a year-round popular destination for tourists from the US mainland. After more than 20 years of service, Spirit Airlines added five new routes to its fleet last year.
Frontier Airlines stated in January that it would open its thirteenth crew base in San Juan. The site would employ up to 200 cabin crew workers and 90 pilots, and it would also contribute around $84 million in local wages annually.
The inauguration of flights from Wilmington, Delaware, and Tweed New Haven, Connecticut, to San Juan last year marked a major milestone for Avelo, which mainly serves the sizable Puerto Rican diaspora.
Spirit Airlines is expanding its network of flights, but it has also made changes in the last year. For example, it has cancelled ten routes, including its only year-round flight from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Manchester Boston Regional Airport (MHT), which will cease on May 7.
The carrier stopped serving the following destinations in the last year: Monterrey, Yeager - Charleston, Bucaramanga (Colombia), Aguadilla and Mercedita (Puerto Rico), Lima (Peru), Los Cabos (Mexico), and Puerto Vallarta (Mexico).
In related news, Spirit just welcomed its tenth Airbus A321neo, the third aircraft to be added in 2024. Spirit Airlines, which flies only Airbus aircraft, intends to phase out its A319s by 2025 in order to make room for more A320neos.
