A problem with the wing slats caused United Airlines' Boeing 757 to divert to Denver

A United Airlines Boeing 757-200 registered N57111 experienced an unplanned diversion to Denver International Airport (DEN) on February 19, 2024, while traveling from San Francisco to Boston.

Problem with Wing Slats

Due to a wing slat issue, flight UA354, which was initially scheduled to arrive at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), was diverted to Denver. As the aircraft reached Denver, the flight crew decided not to declare a general emergency (7700 code) in spite of the circumstances. At 17:17 local time, it successfully touched down (UTC -7).

A United Airlines representative confirmed to Simple Flying that the wing slat problem was the reason for the detour and that all 165 passengers were safe. United made arrangements for another plane to fly on to Boston in order to accommodate the passengers.

According to data from Flightradar24, there are presently no scheduled flights leaving Denver for the impacted Boeing 757-200. In order to fix the slat problem, United Airlines could have to ground the aircraft for repair.

Different Flight Schedule

United Airlines used a different Boeing 757-200 (N34137) to finish the flight to Boston in the interim. The replacement flight arrived at BOS the next day at 01:56, having originally been scheduled to arrive at 22:25.

A Synopsis of the Past

Delivered to Continental Airlines in December 1994, the Boeing 757-200 registered N57111 remained identical to its original configuration following Continental's 2011 merger with United Airlines.

The aircraft has 18,347 flight cycles and 86,889 flight hours during its time with Continental Airlines, according to ch-aviation records. It has accrued an additional 22,052 flying hours and 4,681 flight cycles after switching to United Airlines.

Changeover to New Aircraft

United Airlines has begun converting its fleet of older Boeing 757s to Airbus A321neo and A321XLR aircraft. Its Boeing 757-200s have an average age of 27.1 years, and its 757-300s have an average age of 21.5 years. At the moment, the airline has 21 757-300s and 40 757-200s in service.

United Airlines now has 180 A321neo and A321XLR aircraft on order from Airbus, after placing an additional 60 orders for the aircraft in October 2023.

Difficulties in the Introduction of A321neo

Despite starting to include A321neo aircraft into its fleet, United Airlines has encountered difficulties during the changeover. The airline requested permission from the Department of Transportation (DOT) in February 2024 to fly A321neos without flight attendants in charge of monitoring the "no smoking" sign.

Consequently, a few A321neos, like N24505 and N14502, went through spells of dormancy. For example, N24505 was grounded from January 26 to February 13 and N14502 only flew occasionally from February 12 to February 14 as they processed an exemption request.
