The Sustainable Flight Fund of United Airlines has accomplished a noteworthy feat by topping $200 million. This innovative program seeks to reduce carbon emissions while fostering the development and manufacturing of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With 22 partners presently, the fund includes, among others, Technip, Embraer, Google, Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking, and Air New Zealand.
The partnership includes a range of aviation supply chain participants, such as airlines, manufacturers of aircraft, producers of fuel, and financiers. Together, these 22 organisations have donated more than $200 million to the cause and have used their knowledge to help other members with their marketing efforts.
This project, which was started in February 2023, is a first for the aviation sector. By adding businesses that are pushing feedstock and technology development, it hopes to broaden its network of partners and improve the availability of sustainable aviation fuel on a worldwide scale.
Regular customers can participate in this program as well. During their reservation process, regular travellers using the United App or the website united.com can now choose to make a donation to the UAV Sustainable Flight Fund. $1, $3.50, or $7 contributions can be made in increments. Over 115,000 travellers have contributed half a million dollars since the organisation's online launch in the last 12 months.
In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution related to the aviation industry, sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is emerging as a viable substitute for conventional jet fuel. Greater than any other carrier's pledge to invest in SAF, United Airlines has made a significant investment. The airline is currently looking on ways to accommodate up to five billion gallons of production in the future. In a recent media announcement, United Airlines Ventures' managing director, Andrew Chang, underlined this commitment.
A $3.50 donation might not seem like much, but if every one of the 152 million passengers (the total number of travellers using United alone in 2022) made the suggested amount, there would be more than enough money to create 40 billion gallons of SAF yearly.
United Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance, is unwavering in its resolve to deploy carbon offsets to help achieve net-zero emissions and a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The airline plans to invest in businesses and technology companies committed to decarbonizing the aviation industry. Eco Skies Alliance, its SAF purchase scheme, has already begun.
