Two old Boeing 747-8F aircraft have been acquired by UPS from Qatar Airways Cargo. This action follows the announcement by Qatar Airways Cargo that it will concentrate only on running its fleet of Boeing 777Fs.
During a panel discussion in Amsterdam, Liesbeth Oudkerk, an official in charge of cargo at Qatar Airways, disclosed that the airline plans to sell its two 747-8Fs in order to simplify its operations around the Boeing 777. In addition to operating 27 Boeing 777-200 freighters and having an order for one more, Qatar Airways Cargo also has intentions to operate 34 Boeing 777-8F aircraft in the future.
UPS has already registered one of the two 747-8Fs as N634UP in the US; the registration process was finished on February 9. Although A7-BGB is currently flying for Qatar Airways, it is anticipated that it will shortly be transferred to UPS.
After the company's Q4 2023 financial results announcement, UPS's Chief Financial Officer, Brian Newman, verified the acquisition of the two 747-8Fs on an analyst call. With 299 aircraft in service at the moment, UPS's fleet is diverse, including models from Airbus, Boeing, and McDonnell Douglas. The majority of their sub-fleet is made up of Boeing 767-300F aircraft, of which 78 are in service and 21 are on order. Additionally, UPS flies Boeing 757-200PF planes.
Furthermore, a sizable portion of UPS's fleet consists of MD-11 aircraft, which are becoming progressively less common in commercial aviation. At an average age of 29.5 years, UPS's fleet of 42 MD-11s is both the second-youngest and largest in the world.
