The number of weekly flights that Chinese passenger airlines operate to the United States has increased, according to a statement released by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). Currently limited to 35 weekly round-trip flights, the USDOT will let Chinese airlines run up to 50 weekly flights as of March 31.
The USDOT claims that this decision represents a major step toward returning air travel to about one-third of the weekly flying capacity that existed before the COVID-19 epidemic. This action is considered a component of the measures to stabilise the U.S.-China market ahead of the summer traffic season of 2024.
Before the epidemic, more than 150 weekly round-trip flights were allowed for American and Chinese carriers, respectively. Restrictions brought on by the pandemic, however, drastically decreased these figures. The present increase is part of a phased recovery effort for severely affected flight routes.
Major American airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, represented by Airlines for America, declared their support for the cautious approach taken by the US government in reopening the market with China. There are presently 31 weekly flights from these US carriers to China.
The reintroduction of direct passenger flights between China and the United States was met with joy by the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, which hailed the excellent development. The embassy declared that it would keep trying to improve travel links even more.
Early in 2020, the first limitations significantly decreased the number of weekly round-trip flights from 150 to only eight. Chinese and American carriers received permission to expand to eighteen weekly flights in August 2023. With this latest ruling, the gradual reopening process will continue, enabling Chinese carriers to begin operating 50 weekly round-trip flights to the United States on March 31, 2024.
